Sandtray Therapy from #1 Student Testimony

Student 1 Sand Tray Therapy Testimony

Working with a partner, we created our first sand tray for sand tray therapy with shared miniatures brought in by the class. My partner had many miniatures in her sand tray to represent her large family. I found it quite interesting to hear her tell about each object, and WHY she chose each one, in addition to where they were placed in the sand tray. She seemed to enjoy the process and I liked listening to her explanation.

Since we ran out of time, I actually did my sand tray therapy assignment at home. I did not even have to think about it much, I automatically reverted back to my "sand box days" as a child growing up in rural IL. We lived in the country and my brothers and I used to spend countless hours playing in it. My father was a grain and livestock farmer, so we would always pretend to be him and my uncles driving trucks and equipment to the fields, machine shed, and down the lane to the barns. Therefore, in my sand tray, the two sea turtles represent my brothers, the stand up dinosaur represents me, and we are each by the vehicle we drive around. The tree represents the countryside, and the soldier with the walkie-talkie represents my mother, while the other soldier giving directions represents my father. Setting up this sand tray brought back pleasant memories of playing in our huge sand box with our neighborhood friends.

I definitely see the advantage of having a large miniatures collection for sand tray therapy purposes. I was not really satisfied with the miniatures I chose simply due to the lack of time to find more. Before the next sand tray assignment, I will work on establishing a larger selection.

I see the value in learning how to use sand tray therapy with children as clients. This is an excellent way for them to express what they cannot vocalize. I am especially interested in how to adapt sand tray therapy for high school or college age clients.
