Sand Tray Therapy: Dirt Sand Tray Therapy Tray Assignment - J.

I admit that I can be a little fussy when it comes to playing around in dirt and mud, so I really kept putting off going out and doing the dirt tray for sand tray therapy. Fortunately, I did have a good place to do it, the woods around the summer camp where I’m working. So, finally resolving to get the assignment over with (which, admittedly, was probably not the best attitude to have going into it), I went into work early one morning and made a dirt tray. After a week of constant rain, everything was pretty wet and muddy, and I walked through a couple of spider-webs looking for a good spot to work in, so I was a little grumpy when I did finally settle on a site. This may explain why I was so drawn to the little prickly ball things (I’m not sure what they’re called), putting them in my design in a few places. I was taken by the small pine cones that littered the area, and so I used them to form towers. Looking at the picture I took I realize a couple of things by which I am less than thrilled. First, many of the items I used are the same brownish color, and so it’s a bit hard to make out details in the picture. I also made the mistake of taking the picture from directly overhead, which means that some of the three dimensional features I included are completely invisible. Ultimately, my real problem lies in my resistance to the process this time more than anything else. Owing to my discomfort working in the natural environment I don’t think I really opened myself up particularly well. If there’s a take away from that, then perhaps it is to reinforce the idea that not all techniques are suitable for all clients. The other take away is a more personal one, I can be a bit stuck in my ways and resistant to things outside my comfort zone and that is an area for self-improvement. So, even if this was not completely successful as a sand tray exercise for me, at least it did serve as a learning experience and an opportunity for personal growth.
