Are you a parent or teacher looking for a better way to discipline your children? If so, you have come to the right place. I have been working with children for the past sixteen years. I began my career as a teacher in elementary school. I taught for five years in an inner city school. I then became a school counselor in a middle school, and then in elementary school. This led me to become a licensed professional counselor and a play therapist. I am also a parent myself.
Over the years and many students and clients later (also with my own child), I found myself frusterated with the programs I found on child discipline and child behavior management. I felt that I let teachers and parents down because what I suggested to them (research based or not) simply did not work, or did not work for very long. Belive me, after sixteen years in the field, I have tried everything in the area of child behavior management.
I found that the systems I used offered too many chances to children and did not teach them the necessary skills needed to internally begin to disciplilne themselves. I felt that I was asking teachers and parents to bribe children when they misbehaved. The children that misbehaved got all the attention and rewards. The children who behaved got ignored. Some of the systems were too complicated. Others were too simple. The bottom line was that absolutely nothing worked.
When I was a middle school counselor I watched as the kids with poor behavior fell through the cracks. The teachers were not tolerant of their poor behavior and they got written up and often had to be removed from class. Once you have been written up a certain number of times in middle school you have to go to a panel (School Court). They usually will send your child to an alternative school.
I knew I had to do something to help these kids with poor behavior. They were seriously at risk for getting kicked out of school, or dropping out of school. At some point, no matter how smart your child or adolescent is, their grades will drop. If your adolescent drops out of school they are at risk for unspeakable horrors such as drugs, prison, etc. As a counselor who cares about kids I cannot allow this to happen to anyone, and have to do everything to try to stop it!
Another problem I found with the behavior management systems was that the real world did not reward adults who misbehaved. There were not treasure boxes or three chances to get it right. Once an adult misbehaves there are often serious consequences such as the police, etc. Parents and teachers mean well when applying these behavior management systems, but once the student goes out in the real world things are dramatically different.
So, after trying every program out there for child management I realized I had to create my own behavior management system based on the years of experience I had as a therapist and school counselor. I am offering this to parents and teachers for free because I hate to see good kids make poor choices that can lead to serious consequences in life.
