Play Therapy Teddy Bear Therapy Bonding Experiment
Well, this was a very interesting play therapy experience! My “stuffed animal” was not an actual teddy bear but it was a little stuffed dog. I chose the dog because I grew up with dogs my whole life until I went to college. I connected with the dog because it can be an actual companion and it was for me. I named my dog Peewee!
I started carrying Peewee on a day I knew I would be a little busy. I would put Peewee in the passenger seat while I drove around. It was really funny because I would actually look over at him and make sure he was ok. It was the craziest thing! I haven’t really taken care of anything (other than myself) lately but those instincts shifted right in gear. I loved having Peewee right there in that passenger seat. He was a great stress reliever as well. Whenever I got upset, I would caress his soft hair. That tactile contact with him was very calming and necessary for me to distract from stress and frustration.
I remembered as a child, I was not very connected to stuffed animals. I may have been in the early years but I can’t remember having a favorite stuffed animal. This experience has opened my mind to some important things. For me, I recalled the need to look after or take care of something other than a person. I really think I should consider adopting a small dog. I really miss having a dog. For children in play therapy, I think a connection with a stuffed animal could be very beneficial. I could definitely see this experience developing responsibility and care-taking skills. These are skills that should be cultivated early and hopefully promote healthy adult relationships.
