Play Therapy Puppet Theater No. 13

Play Therapy Puppet Theater No. 13

I was unsure how I would design a play therapy puppet theater especially since I do not consider myself a creative person. I was able to develop the skit before actually making the board. I knew that I wanted my skit to deal with being above the influence. I chose that topic because it is extremely important and it touches all school aged children. I find it upsetting that the schools have to treat topics, such as drugs and sex, as mature topics; leaving the age that awareness can benefit unarmed. From working at a mental health facility I know that children in elementary schools are exposed to drugs and sex, but their teachers and parents do not want to talk about them. All of that frustration allowed me to make a skit that addressed a more innocent topic of smoking.
I used a display board for the base. My thought process for the background was that I wanted the children to be able to create their own worlds on the play therapy puppet theater. Ideally I would have used a chalk board so that they could create and recreate their scenes. Since I didn’t have enough time to create my full vision, I used a black poster board as my chalk board background and I wrote the words using colorful chalk. I chose words that relate to common peer pressures. I think that words can be powerful because it still allows you to imagine and attach your own vision behind the words.
I made my puppets out of paper bags. I used pom pom balls for the noses and pipe cleaners for the hair. While I was creating Jimmy and Jessica I was genuinely enjoying myself. My husband and I actually made extras. I think that this is a great way to be creative and alternate ways of expression.
Over all I liked my puppet theater, I really surprised myself. I know that this will not be my last theater.
