Play Therapy -- Inner Child Journal Journey for School Counselors, Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologist to Try

Inner Child Journal for Play Therapy Class

Inner Child Journal for Play Therapy Class

The inner child journal for play therapy was very moving and eye opening journey as a therapist.. It took a long time for me to choose the items I wanted represented within the journal, but I realized that I was very particular about what I chose to represent ME and my childhood.

When I started writing the letters to my Inner Child, I started crying, which was unexpected for me. But it allowed me to understand what I need to keep focused upon (my dreams) and to not neglect my inner child for the sake of fulfilling responsibilities. Somewhere, I’m sure Peter Pan is nodding his head…

I was most moved when I constructed the apology and lost dreams letters. The apology letter wasn’t bothersome because I had “lost” my inner child. I still have my inner child, and she manifests herself sometimes, but not as often as I would like to as of lately.

It bothered me because I realized that she is what makes me who I am, and just as importantly, she makes me an amazing mother. My kids recognize this when I let her out, and it makes me so much more relatable to them. My inner child is their friend.

But I suppose I’ve been using my inner child like I wear my hats – I have my “Nurse Mom” hat, my “Teacher Mom” hat, my “Dictator Mom” hat, my “Janitor Mom” hat…….I think I just take my inner child and shove her in the closet where I keep my hats sometimes, and it’s not fair to me or her.

The lost dream letter made me sad because it addresses a place I am still “stuck” in, and it made me realize how amazing and patient my mother is. One of my dreams I’ve shelved is also my mother’s dream, and she’s still waiting or expecting for me to pursue it. I don’t want to sacrifice my peace of mind and stability of life to pursue it, although I’m very sure we would be successful at it.

I wouldn’t want the success to overwhelm me or take over my life. As a result, I feel very guilty about the fact that I’ve inadvertently put my mother’s dream on hold.

Every school counselor, therapists, play therapist, social worker, and psychologist needs to do this inner child activity before any session with a client!
