Play therapy game example for you to try!

The play therapy game feelings chess game from Dr. Stangline's Creative Counseling 101 book allowed me to reflect on the various feelings that I experienced throughout the week, identify them, and select a miniature that represented each of these feelings.

At first I was a bit confused as to how to complete this activity because I kept associating it with the actual game of chess, which I don’t play.

Through my research, I discovered that the play therapy game of chess is largely based on an array of emotions the player may be experiencing at that given time. This can change from one move to the next or from one game to the next just like the emotions I felt throughout the day and week.

As I reflected on the emotions, I realized a pattern of very strong, intense feelings and recognized that it negatively and positively affected my mood, attitude, interactions with others and productivity level.

As I selected miniatures to represent my emotions I wondered if there were additional underlying feelings that had not yet surfaced. I also found myself switching out my miniatures as I searched for the ideal miniature to represent my feelings. This activity could be used for all ages and developmental levels and is a great way to get clients to describe their feelings without necessarily engaging in dialog.

I could see myself utilizing this play therapy game of feelings chess in the future.
