Fortunately for me, I still have my Winnie the Pooh teddy bear that my mom purchased for me when I was 3 years old. I remember the day she bought it. We had recently located from Jacksonville, FL to Savannah, GA after she remarried. We went on a shopping spree to a now bankrupt department store where I picked out the bear. Winnie has seen me through many life challenges. Prior to this project, Winnie resided on the guest bed in my home. I must admit, I was not thrilled to take on this project. Fortunately, it came at a time when I needed some extra support as I suddenly lost my eldest brother. My family is 4 hours away so it was a few days before we could all gather. Surprisingly, Winnie was there to be a source of comfort for me while I was tasked to making funeral decisions and arrangements alone. I must admit, I did leave him in the car with the windows cracked while I went into the funeral home but otherwise he and I were connected at all times.
It took me a few hours to get adjusted to someone being with me all the time as I am single and have no children. I initially took on a more parental role, feeling responsible for the caring and attention of the bear for fear I may leave him behind before I succumb to finding comfort in the bear. I found myself creating a mental checklist that I once voiced out loud to ensure that I had my bear, my wallet and my mind.
Overall, the project was ideal for tapping back into your inner child for play therapy classand redefining comfort as seen through the eyes of a child. It allowed me an opportunity to reminisce about my childhood reflecting back to a pivotal point in my life that I often wonder how my life would have been different had not my mother remarried.
