Play Therapy Theater: Storytelling Experience
There is something about creating something through arts and crafts that subtly forces you to erase all distractions and thoughts from your mind and put everything you have into what you envision. That is the best way to describe my play therapy experience while completing this puppet project.
The very first step I had to take to start this play therapy assignment was to pick a story. As a child, I loved reading with a passion and knew so many different stories. Watching “Reading Rainbow” and attending shows with griots at the local arts center, I grew up imagining myself a part of so many stories. Puppet shows and plays have always been my favorite because there was always so much energy between the players and the audience. I immediately had thoughts of my favorite stories, from “Abiyoyo” to “Anasai” and I knew folklore was the way to go.
Once I picked “Stone Soup” my mind immediately started turning with ideas. I spent so much time, trying to make the material I had fit the ideas I had come up with. It got to the point, I was so engrossed, I looked up and it was hours later, the television shows I had planned to watch over for a while.
