Connecting food with feelings in play therapy.....what a novel thought for a play therapy session! I try to NOT connect food with my feelings, however, for this class I did indulge. At first as our group was mixing the colors into the frosting, I did not really see how this form of expression would be beneficial, and yet in some strange way it was indeed.
Each play therapy member of our group decorated two cookies. For myself, I did one cookie portraying my physical feelings and one portraying my emotions. Since Thursdays are my long days (with internship & class), I chose gray to cover the cookie, representing how tired I felt. I placed a blue dot in the center to show serenity in spite of the weariness. I frosted my second cookie with yellow, representing how happy I was that day to see a counseling friend return from maternity leave. I placed swirls of red and orange frosting on the outer edges, representing how upset I was to find out that this counselor simultaneously went through a divorce. Unfortunately, her former husband had a problem with infidelity.
If I were to do a play therapy feeling cookie session with any students, I would prepare a much larger cookie to work with, and have multiple colors to choose from.
In addition, if I were to do a play therapy "feelings bottle" with younger students, I would likewise have a larger selection of confetti, small seashells, & other different objects to drop into the bottle. I can see where rapid shaking of the bottle might be a form of anger management.
