My Mandala for Play Therapy Class!!!

This mandala project for play therapy class was very fun and interesting. I wanted to use things that I already had at home but I also wanted it to have meaning.

So, I immediately thought about food (dry of course). I always associate food with family; it is a very strong connection for me.

I grew up in Louisiana and my grandfather owned a very large farm. He basically took care of the farm on his own.

He had chickens, pigs, and also grew various types of vegetables. His work ethic and drive has always been a very strong reference for the young men growing up in our family.

It taught me that nothing in life comes easily and not to be afraid of hard work. I feel like I am an extension of my family of origin and “certain” foods always connect me to them.

I like fresh collard greens, black eyed peas, and sweet potatoes. No matter where I go in this world, I never forget where I come from.

The materials in my mandala are all about my family and how I feel about them. I used black eyed peas, red beans, a small piece of floral fabric, and blue paint.

The black eyed peas reminded me of my family. My grandfather grew black eyed peas in his garden. We would all get together on the weekends and shell bushels of peas.

I remember those days and hating the work but I now appreciate that quality time I spent with my family. All of those talks from my aunts and cousins are very vivid, fond memories.

The formation of the mandala is important to me. I am the small pea in the center and the red beans and peas represent my extended family’s support around me.

The fabric reminded me of the quilts my grandmother used to make. They were not fancy quilts at all; they were very rustic and abstract.
