This Mandala Circle activity is a wonderful way to use art counseling and play therapy with clients.
I often have several of these circles pre-printed for clients to use when making a mandala.
Sometimes clients will come in and start the session with a mandala warm up. Be ready for the needs of your clients by having several copies of the mandala on hand.
This activity is excellent for your play therapy clients.
I often do the mandala for my own personal therapy. It is interesting to see the past journeys I have taken with my mandala therapy. It is also a fun way to play!
In doing my own personal mandala therapy I can see certain situations I was in at the time and how I viewed them.
I always think of the song from Elton John, The Lion King. In this song there is a line that says, “The twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in time.”
Mandalas are similar to the kaleidoscope as we are magnifying something from our lives when we put our images and ideas in a circle.
The song reminds me that my mandala is a time and place, or “here and now.” My personal mandala will change if I give it time.
Try doing a mandala with your play therapy clients. You can print out several copies of the mandala below.
Make sure you have crayons or markers available for your client to use. You may also want to use other materials.
My suggestion is to try the simplest form of the mandala first by using markers, or crayons. Then, seek other creative materials to use for the mandala.
Try to give your play therapy client a homework assignment that is centered on the mandala. You will be amazed at how creative the play therapy client may be when creating the mandala.
Never ask a play therapy client to use a tool that you have not first tried out on yourself.
If you want to try to use the mandala on a play therapy client, make sure you have created several for your own well-being first.
