Moon Sand is fun for kids to play with in the sand tray therapy tray because it retains its shape better than regular play sand.
I make my own moon sand tray therapy sand from a recipe I have altered. Below is my moon sand recipe. I have a sand tray that I keep only moon sand in.
I find that many younger children will be attracted to the moon sand tray. Younger children like the look, feel and texture of moon sand in the sand tray.
However, many teens and adults have enjoyed playing with the moon sand in the sand tray.
Materials for Moon Sand Tray Therapy Sand:
To fill up an entire regulation sand tray therapy tray you will need to make a lot of moon sand. Try making a smaller batch first and using it in a small sand tray.
To fill up a sand tray:
24 cups of play sand
12 cups of cornstarch
5 1/2 cups of cold water
3 small bottles of glitter
Directions for Moon Sand Sand Tray Therapy Sand:
1. Mix the cornstarch with the water and stir well.
2. Add the sand in small amounts. Use your fingers to work the material as if you were making bread. Add glitter and work it in well. Now you have your own cheap moon sand for the sand tray therapy tray!
3. This will dry out. When it does just sprinkle some water over it in small amounts. You may want to put a cover over your sand tray moon sand and use when the younger children come in for sand tray therapy.
