Play Therapy Class Assignment: Bonding with a Teddy Bear

Through doing a scrapbook with my inner child for play therapy and bonding with a teddy bear in my adult life, I have learned a lot about my inner child in play therapy. I was surprised to learn that I am not as out of touch with my inner child as I thought I would be. I suppose this is because I work with children so I have to be in touch with my inner child to understand them to some extent. I also learned that my inner child and I have a lot in common. We still like the same things and she is with me all the time in my thoughts and choices.
One of the most fun experiences with my inner child in play therapy through this process was the shopping trip for a toy. I let my inner child take charge and it was just like old times! I wanted everything! My adult self had to step in because I could not spend all my money on toys. But I now know that when I feel that tendency it is my inner child talking.
Dr. Stangline told us that while you get in touch with your inner child you will have pleasant memories come up but you will also have unpleasant things come up. At the time I didn't really understand. However on the drive home from class I started singing to the radio. This is something that I haven't done in quite awhile. Then I remembered that I loved to sing as a child, but don't really do it anymore.
I remembered that in first grade my elementary school had a chorus try-out and I did not make it. That was the first time that I ever thought I couldn't do something or felt that I was bad at something. It was the first time I felt failure and shame. I didn't sing much after that and still don't because I don't believe that I am good at it. It is amazing what we still experience from our childhood and bring into adulthood. I am in touch with my inner child during this play therapy class. I talk to her, protect her, and love her.
