Free play therapy activity: Make a Fairy Tale Miniature World with Play Therapy Clients

When I was asked to make a play therapy fairy tale world, my mind went to all the different stories I have heard and seen over the years.
I knew I needed a princess, a prince, a fairy godmother, and a dragon. I went looking for the right miniature to fulfill those roles.
The princess is Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. She inspired my screen name. I have always loved her. I loved both her names and her personality and knew she would be my princess. I also knew she would be in the blue dress and not the pink one. I have never been a pink girl.
Then I thought about my prince charming and knew I wouldn't pick any disney prince.

None of them were right ot me except maybe Aladdin and he wasn't a prince. Then I thought of Tuxedo Mask from an anime show I watched when I was younger. His name was Darien, but he became Tuxedo Mask to fight the forces of evil. He also was a little older and edgier and practically perfect. I loved him so he made the perfect prince since in was a prince set to marry the princess of the moon in the show.
Then I thought about my fairy godmother.

I thought about the typical cartoon one, but she never appealed to me. Then I remembered the live action Rodgers and Hammerstein version where the fairy godmother was beautiful and sweet. I went in search of a picture of her and could only find a black and white one. She is in the fact the pink part of me- the girly part of me that's allowed frivolous costumes and magic.
I already had a dragon guarding his treasure so I just made hima cave.

I posed the princess in the woods so the prince could come and save her. The dragon was feared, but in reality he was just protecting his own and was in fact a nice dragon. The fairy godmother was mostly moral support, but she did create the bridge to help prince charming find the princess so that's why it's sparkly.

Telling the story is fun and using it for self-exploration in play therapy is interesting. I got to think about why I chose these play therapy miniatures and what they mean to me.
