Family Genogram Example for My Sand Tray Therapy Class

Family Genogram Example for My Sand Tray Therapy Class

I have created many genograms for myself and others, but this is the first genogram that I have created in the sand (or out of the sand) without paper and pencil. I am the youngest child of five, my mother only married once, she married my oldest sister’s (first born) father, then she had her second child my brother with another man, the relationship did not last long. She then met my father and had three children, myself and my two sisters.
The elephant represents my mother because I view the elephant as being strong and protective over its young. The rock represents my father because I view rocks as strong, resilient, and indestructible. The baby in the basket represents me and the fact that I am the baby of the family. The Armadillo represents my sister who appears to have a hard/tough outside but the outer shell does not represent what is on the inside. The tree represents {Si} she is strong, dependable, and sturdy. The dinosaur skeleton represents my brother who is deceased. The scorpion represents my oldest sister {K} who is estranged from the family. She has had a lot of negativity and broken relationships in her life.
This was a powerful yet simple representation of a genogram, using the miniatures made the genogram seem more real. There was some difficulty in choosing the proper miniature to match specific family members. Since my brother was about eight years older than I am and we did not have a very close relationship. I find it slightly difficult to describe him in great detail.
I choose to described my father as indestructible because he has had many trials. He is a Veteran, has had legal problems, and drug addiction. Since he survived all of his past trials I view him as a solid rock; he has overcome a lot and lived to talk about it.
