A Better Way to Prevent Bullying
What I have learned is that bullies are everywhere. A bully can be a neighbor, mother-in-law, boss, college professor, etc. They are sad and unhappy people. The learned to bully and it became a "learned behavior" for them.
Belive it or not, their self-talk to themselves is usually much worse than what they say to the "victim". I have found this out when I do therapy with the adults, or kids who bully others.
Many child bullies have been bullied by their parents and need deep therapy. The old saying, "Misery loves company" is alive and well. They are unhappy and want others to be unhappy with them.
Don't let your child fall into the "victim role". Teach them coping skills and role play with them often.
Make sure you allow your child to handle the little things such as "teasing". Kids can be mean and love to say nasty things to other kids. You can think of this as an experiment and let your kid practice their new coping skills on the "teaser". Tell your child who is being bullied, "I know you can handle this one issue. I am here to step in when you can't handle it."
Tell your child who is being bullied that you are the "big problem handler". If they are being physically threatened with bullying then step in and get help from the school.
When you use this type of mentality you are empowering your child and raising their self esteem when you teach them bullying prevention skills. You will be helping your child to deal with people in the future. It also will raise their emotional intellegence.
Remember, nothing is easy and bullying prevention coping skills takes time and practice. Bullying Prevention requires a lot of playing practice.
So help your child today with bullying prevention and stop the cycle of "bully and victim mentality of bullying"!
