Children often get frightened sleeping alone and conjure up all kids of thoughts about monsters being in the closet or under the bed.
When children are in the magical thinking stages of development it is often difficult to rationalize with them that there are no "monsters" under the bed.
I often talk to children who struggle with this issue.
Of course I go over a safety checklist (Mom and Dad are in the next room, dog in house, alarm, etc.) with them to process that they are truly safe at night.
We talk about how there are no monsters in their house, bedroom, or closet. However, I make up some "Monster Go-Away Aromatherapy Spray" for my clients to use just in case they need a little something extra to go to sleep.
The lavender scent is the base spray with "Monster Go-Away Aromatherapy Spray". I use lavender aromatherapy for two reasons.
Reason number one is that lavender smells funny to children. The first time I smelled it I thought it smelled like a pesticide. Pesticides get rid of bugs, right? So from a child's perspective lavender gets rid of monsters.
The second reason I use lavender aromatherapy is that it actually helps you relax and fall asleep.
The second scent note of aromatherapy I use is "blueberry". Blueberry essential oil sweetens up the lavender scent a bit and kids like it.
Put it together (see below directions) in a spray bottle and use as needed at night under the bed, bathroom, or in the closet.
This is a magical "aromatherapy" potion that works in the middle of the night when a child is terrified.
It can also give mom and dad a better nights rest, and it empowers the child to take charge and spray away monsters.
I have even used this aromatherapy technique with adolescents.
Materials Jojoba Oil or Carrier Oil Spray Bottle
Lavender and Blueberry Essential Oils
1. Mix ten to twelve drops each of lavender and blueberry essential oils with the jojoba.
2. Put the spray top on and label the bottle.
3. Place near the bed in case of emergency monsters! Spray when needed.
