A Teddy Bear Therapy Assignment for Play Therapy

A Teddy Bear Therapy Assignment for Play Therapy

The teddy bear experience for play therapy was very eye opening for me. The assignment was to carry around a teddy bear for 24 hours. The bear I used was given to me along with a gift from my husband. I almost forgot I had the bear, but the gift I got, I wear everyday. This assignment, I thought would be an easy one for me. I mean who couldn’t carry around a teddy bear. Apparently me! I had no idea how difficult this assignment would be for me.

I have a very hectic schedule at this time and my time is very limited. The first morning, I completely forgot the teddy bear. I had to turn around come back home, and run upstairs and grab the bear. At work, not too many people asked about JP. I explained to a few people that this was a class assignment, but I think most people could see I was frustrated. I think that the most frustrating part of this assignment was that I had to take it everywhere. It made me feel as if I had a child, and I know that where I am in my life right now I am not ready for kids. I felt really burdened by having to take this teddy bear everywhere I went. It really felt like I had a child, and it made me want to have a baby sitter or something.

I think this play therapy assignment would have been a better experience for me if it happened when I was younger, or even maybe at stage where I’m not running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I do remember really liking stuffed animals growing up. When the tickle me Elmo doll came out, I could wait to get it. My mom and I rushed to get it. When we got to Wal-Mart, one of my teachers was there and she made a comment of me being too old to purchase a teddy bear. My mother informed her that she would like for me to stay as young and child like for as long as possible, and that I have many years to worry about being older. I acquired a total of 3 Elmo stuffed animals all after age 15.

If I could say the one thing this play therapy assignment taught me, is that I am not ready for kids, but then again I already knew that 
