A Homemade Play Therapy Game for Therapist to Try

A Homemade Play Therapy Game for Therapist to Try

This play therapy assignment involved creating a play therapy game or modifying an existing game for children that could be used in therapy. My game was a twist on the old classic game of memory. I call my game “Memory Share”. This play therapy game could be used as an icebreaker for group work or it could be used in an individual counseling session.

The play therapy instructions are as follows: first place all the card on a flat surface like a table of the floor. Players will try to match cards. Before the game begins players will roll two giant dice. This person with the highest roll will go first. Once the player matches two cards the player will have to roll on giant dice piece to determine how many things he/she can share. If the cards match the player has two options; share something about themselves, or pass the turn to the next player. Another way to play it is the person can chose to play again and try to get two more matches.

The construction of the play therapy game is quite simple. The supplies include a pack of 3X5 note cards, various stickers that have duplicates, a pair of giant dice. All these items may be purchased at the dollar store, or a department store like Wal-Mart. I used geometric foam pieces that had a peel-off adhesive back.

This can also be done by drawing shapes on the cards and coloring with different color crayons, color pencils, or markers. This could actually be an activity; clients going through the steps of creating the game. Once the client completes the process the game could be started. This game could help client feel comfortable about sharing because other members in the group would as have a turn to share. I enjoyed this play therapy game project it brought back members of my childhood when we did not have many toys due to my mother financial status. We were very creative with regard to making toys; especially around the holidays and summer times.
