See a Play Therapy Self Portrait
My play therapy self portrait depicts the dichotomy between simple versus intricate. I perceive myself as a very simple, transparent being but I am often perceived as the opposite. In determining how to visually portray my “insides,”
I reviewed several previous personal journal entries and then just let my mind go soft. Unlike the sand tray and mandala, I felt as though my self portrait would incite self judgment, and not in a positive way.
To let my brain go soft and lean into this play therapy self portrait project, I first colored random pages of a coloring book. Slowly, I let go of the need to judge myself and drew a picture of how I authentically felt about me.
I chose to depict the contrast to bring into consciousness my body language and behaviors that could potentially impede my effectiveness as a play therapist psychotherapist.
This play therapy self portrait exercise would be excellent when working with teens suffering from eating disorders. In counseling adults, I would use this activity in conjunction with motivational interviewing to help the client affirm their long term goals by asking them to draw a picture of how they will perceive themselves once they met their goal.
