In-Class Experience of the Sand Tray Therapy

The classroom offers an very excellent environment to learn various aspects about sandtray therapy.

I enjoyed learning about sand tray therapy's history, the meaning of symbols, how miniatures are used, the different sandtray experts, various techniques, and demonstrations used on clients.

However, I find myself feelings exposed and tend to not go as deep as I could. It is like having a counseling session in front of the class.

Indeed, I understand the instructional aspects that are necessary for the class to demonstrate to counselors in-training.

I think I would be more forthcoming were I in the privacy of a closed session. Certainly, there can been some insight gleaned from this type of exposure.

However, I sometimes find it challenging to completely express innermost thoughts within the classroom environment for sand tray therapy.

This was unquestionably evident in the group lab I participated in last semester.

The group leader and several classmates mentioned that throughout the semester I was not very forthcoming during the counseling sessions.

Part of it was I am not one that easily shares my feelings, certainly not to a group of strangers. I explained to my group members that I have gained much from simply being in the groups setting.

It takes tremendous fortitude to share in this manner and I commended everyone that shared weekly. I further explained that in my life I am usually the one that my friends and family relying for support.

Therefore, I have long shielded my feeling and neglected my emotional concerns for those of other. Throughout the counseling program I have made progress in this area and look forwarded to increasing my emotional maturity.

At home experience for sand tray therapy:

Creating a sandtray at home was a much more relaxing activity for me. My anxiety level was reduced as I am able to concentrate on me feelings at that moment.

While I am placing miniatures in the sandtray it feels like a very organic process and it flows much smoother than when I am in the classroom.

I can move from one area to the next; I feel the process unfolding naturally. There are a few other elements that allow the process to unravel for me.

One is the obvious time constraints of the classroom. There is a finite amount of time that can be allocated to various activities in the class room environment.

Therefore, I find myself addressing concerns that are easier to visually represent or things that take the shortest about of time to create in the sandtray.

From a creative standpoint I find myself better able to express my artistic side when creating a sandtray from home.

I can copiously think about what aspect of my life I would like to discuss and then conceptually storyboard the events and concepts without time constraints.

Compared to talk therapy, I certainly enjoy having the ability to visually represent difficult emotions and issue while simultaneously tapping into the less cephalic element of my personality.
