Play Therapy -- House Moon Tree Art Counseling Portrait Example

This play therapy assignment made me nostalgic. The tree reminds me of falltime in Michigan (where I'm from), that's when I think the trees are most beautiful there.

I wanted a brick ranch house cause I love brick ranch houses and I live in a brick ranch house as well. The crescent moon was the only moon that would fit into my picture.

I thought about this scene being in the fall, so a fireplace would be going inside of the house, which is why smoke is coming out of the chimney.

The dog kind of looks like my dog, Max, a black-and-white Cocker Spaniel I used to have.

Looking up the meanings of the symbols in my picture was interesting.

Apparently, a tree during the fall season represents the ending of something and the rebirth or renewal of something, or the life cycle in general.

The moon itself is a symbol of a female or something feminine, and the crescent moon indicates the stage of adolescence or young adulthood.

A house is also a feminine symbol and represents the self. The brick exterior represents having a guard up or solid boundaries, yet the interior is warm (as evidenced by the smoke from the chimney).

The color grey represents maturity and reliability, but can also represent being noncommital. One dictionary for play therapy stated that the chimney smoke represents sexual, not sure about that one.

Nighttime represents self-reflection and a black-colored dog represents the shadow aspect of a friend. I'd say that most of these play therapy symbols are accurate, with exception to the chimney, and I'm not so sure about the tree.

I'm pretty self-reflective, and I don't think my personality and perspective has changed much since I was a teenager. I can be very non-commital with things, and I'm pretty sure the brick house analogy adds up to how I am perceived by others.

I DO try to keep solid boundaries with people I'm involved with (friends and relatives), which accounts for less stress in my life.

I would use this for school counseling and play therapy in private therapy.
