Teddy Bear Tea: An Exercise for Play Therapy Class

by Play Therapy Student

Teddy Bear Tea Exercise
For Play Therapy
The teddy bear exercise for play therapy was interesting and enlightening for me. My only regret is that my teddy bear and I didn’t go on any outings together. We went to class together, and although some of my classmates looked at the bear and smiled, no one said anything except the instructor. The instructor asked me about the bear and I informed her that it was for a play therapy class.
The bear that I chose is one that I’ve had for over 10 years and received it as a graduation gift. The bear was kept on my dresser and we never had any bonding experiences until this assignment. I had never previously named my bear, but decided that “she-she”, a childhood nickname, would be most appropriate. I was honestly afraid to dirty her because for the past 10 years she has remained mostly untouched.
I spent most of the day lounging on the couch watching tv and on the computer. It was a pretty lazy day for me, so she-she and I had an uneventful day. I had to make sure that I didn’t leave her behind wherever I went in the house because my pet dog was not too far behind waiting to snatch her. He thinks that all the stuffed animals in the house are his and I had to guard poor she-she from him.
At night I could not sleep with her because my dog once again kept trying to drag her out of the bed, so instead I placed her on the night stand next to my bed where I could keep a watchful eye on her. As a result, we didn’t get to snuggle in bed or sleep together, so I’m not sure what effects that experience would have created.
As a child I was surrounded with a large collection of teddy bears. I toted them everywhere, played school with them and even slept with them. My favorite was a kangaroo that my mother received from a friend at her baby shower. My brother had ripped his neck off and it was sewn back together and I loved her so. This activity reminded me of the bond I shared with my stuffed kangaroo and I asked my mother to mail her to me so that I can keep her near just in case I ever need her.
