Teddy Bear Experience for Play Therapy Class: Idea Activity

I’ve never been a stuffed animal fan. Nande belongs to our youngest daughter. Our relationship began awkwardly, but we warmed-up to each other. I took Nande to work (middle school) with me. She fit right in. People’s reactions were mixed. My immediate colleagues widened their eyes when they saw us.

The expressions seemed to say, “OK, what’s up with the stuffed animal?” I freely volunteered the information. When I left her a couple of times, one of my colleagues suggested I get a scarf and tie her to me. For some reason that seemed like it would be cheating and awkward. By then I was beginning to feel a little closer to her.

I replied that I would be able to remember her without her being tied to me. I still forgot her a couple more times.
When I went to other parts of the building, either people would ask about or they would act like they didn’t see her. Also, she got lots of compliments. I ended up taking her to work two days, because I didn’t think I was attentive enough the first day. I wanted to take her the third day, but I had told everyone it was a 24 hour assignment for play therapy.

We talked some, but not a lot. I did find myself talking to others through my bear. Having Nande made me feel better and calmer. I felt more secure and peaceful sleeping with her. However, we didn’t really bond. I think it would take me longer to open-up with her.

Since Nande belonged to my daughter, I’ve been looking for my own stuffed animal. Nobody has reached out and grabbed me yet. I’ll keep looking and when I find her, I think I’ll try it again for a longer period of time. Also, this just may not be my activity even if it is play therapy.
