Analysis of a Sand Tray in Sand Tray Therapy Class
by: 10804025

My first reaction to the sand tray therapy tray, is noticing the empty vastness. The tray had a few trees, but outside that, it was just a stretch of sand. The main tree is small; stems are thin and short and have many branches. Short thin stem may denote weak ego especially in the presence of the sun. The many branches may also indicate too much reaching out to meet needs. On the same side of the tree is the half buried sun and this is located opposite the house; a place that connotes safety for the creator. This may mean safety from the glare of the sun away from the sun as possible. The creek with water separates the sun from the house. I wonder what role the water/ creek plays in shielding the creator of the tray from the father. What kind of relationship dynamics exist between these three. Does the creek act as a referee or go between? The water/creek is also closer to the creator and seems to offer nurturance and support, but also help maintain the gap between the creator and the sun (father).
Does the creator’s relationship with the water/creek help reinforce the distance between her and the sun (father)? The tree and the sun are also on the same side away from the house and safety. This may denote the creator's reservation and wariness at bringing people close. She may prefer to keep people at arm’s length because of fear of getting hurt. She may tend to put people at the same emotional distance with her father. The creator may wish to step out of her cocooned relationship with the water/creek and venture into developing other meaningful relationships.
