Teaching the importance of manners and touching on the subject of making new friends.

Pete the Puppy Makes New Friends
Betsy Butterfly: Greetings boys and girls. My name in Betsy and I would like to tell you the story of how Pete the Puppy learned to make new friends. Once upon a time there was a puppy named Pete. He had recently moved to a new barn and is about to begin his first day of school. It is September and since Pete is new to the barnyard, he has not had a chance to make any friends yet. He is an only child and does not quite know how to go about making new friends. His mom, dad and new teacher, (Ms. Ollie Owl), all told him that all he had to do is wear a grin and it will be easy to make new friends. So let’s listen in to see if this advice works for Pete.
Ms. Ollie Owl: Good morning boys and girls. This is our new friend Pete. We want to welcome him in the best way we know how.
Betsy Butterfly: The class all yells out: “Hello Pete.” Pete feels so happy and grins from ear to ear. He takes his and before you know it, someone offers to be his friend.
Patty Pig: Hi Pete. I’m Patty and my mom always makes me great snacks and lets me play in the yard after school. Would you like to come over and join me today?
Pete the Puppy: Sure. Thanks. I will be there.
Patty Pig: Well I saw you guys move in and you are only two doors down from my house. I live in the straw house. So just come on over.
Pete the Puppy: OK
Betsy Butterfly: Later that day, Pete goes over to Patty’s house to play. Let’s see how things go.
Pete the Puppy: Patty, Patty let me in. Let’s hurry up and become friends.
Patty Pig: Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin. That’s not the way that you begin when you really want to make a friend.
Pete the Puppy: Well I’ll huff and puff and blow your door in. And then at least you can see my grin.
Betsy Butterfly: Pete blows down Patty’s door and Patty runs off screaming. Pete just cannot understand why the advice about the grin did not work. He thought something must be wrong with Patty and decides to try again tomorrow at school.
Ms. Ollie Owl: Well boys and girls Patty will not be with us today. Her mom says Patty is a little ill. So Pete would you sit next to Pepa today?
Pepa Pig: Hi Pete. I’m Pepa. My dad always lets me have sandwiches and cookies after school. Would you like to come over after school today to eat with me?
Pete the Puppy: Sure Pepa.
Pepa Pig: Well I live one street over from Patty in the stick house. So just come on over when your mom says it’s ok.
Pete the Puppy: Great I will be there.
Betsy Butterfly: Pete is sure this time he will make Pepa his new friend. He practices his grin for the rest of the day. Let’s see how things go with Pepa.
Pete the Puppy: Pepa, Pepa let me in. Let’s hurry up and become friends.
Pepa Pig: Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin. That’s not the way that you begin when you really want to make a friend.
Pete the Puppy: Well I’ll huff and puff and blow your door in. And then at least you can see my grin.
Betsy Butterfly: Pete blows down Pepa’s door and Pepa runs off screaming. Pete just cannot understand why the advice about the grin did not work once again. He thought something must be wrong with Patty and Pepa and decides to try one last time tomorrow at school. Both Patty and Pepa come to school that day but refuse to sit next to Pete. So Ms. Ollie Owl seats him next to Freddy Frog.
Freddy Frog: Hi Pete. My name is Freddy and I am having a birthday party tomorrow and would love for you to come.
Pete the Puppy: I would love to come too Freddy, but I haven’t had much luck making friends and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
Freddy Frog: Well are you remembering to say please and thank you like Ms. Owl teaches us?
Pete the Puppy: No. I thought all I had to do was show them my grin and they would want to be my friends.
Freddy Frog: The grin helps but manners are what make true friends.
Pete the Puppy: Wow, I wish I would have known that before I blew things with Patty and Pepa.
Freddy Frog: Well it’s not too late. All you have to do is apologize to them and we can all be friends at my party.
Pete the Puppy: Really? OK, thanks for the advice Freddy. I will try it right now.
Betsy Butterfly: So that’s exactly what Pete did. He apologized to Patty and Pepa and we all had a great time at Freddy’s party.
