Why Play Therapy Toys?
The toys in my play therapy room are my greatest tools as a play therapist and sand tray therapist. I could not imagine doing any type of therapy without them! This includes adults and children.
My toys do most of the work for me as a play therapist. I just have to have the knowledge and skill of how to utilize them to help my client.
I love bringing a child (or even an adult) into the play therapy room and seeing the look on their faces. It is the look of "pure amazement". I am just a simple play and sand tray therapist, so I don't have a billion toys. I have spent years being selective with the toys I buy. I never spend a lot of money either!
My toys work hard for me and I keep them in good condition. I am constantly rethinking my toys and some get tossed as I add new toys to the collection.
When I have a child who is upset or resistant, all I have to do is bring the child to the play room. My toys do the rest of the work for me.
For a few moments the child forgets they are upset. The toys call to them. The child is curious. I introduce my toys to the child. The child begins to trust me and the toys.
Even when the child remembers they are upset, the toys still work their magic. The child just needs more time and more introductions to the toys.
My toys work 99% of the time. Extreme cases are always longer to get the child to adjust to the toys. If you know this before you begin to work with toys it can tell you which children are more adjusted than others.
