Play Therapy Teddy Bear Tea Party Technique

Play Therapy Teddy Bear Tea Party Technique

Play Therapy Teddy Bear Tea Party Technique

At the beginning, I was very reluctant about this play therapy assignment so I turned to strategy. I tried to choose a day to carry my stuffed animal for 24 hours when I would see the least amount of people; that did not work. After denial, I went to the acceptance stage.

I concluded to take my stuffed animal with me on whatever day I could comply with the guidelines of the assignment. I explained my assignment to my family. My husband had no objections and my children were excited to “make sure Mommy did her homework”.

As I started the play therapy assignment, I named my stuffed animal, Kringle. Kringle is a puppy that wiggles, plays a song, and spins her bone while displaying three different messages; she has mastered the skill of multi-tasking. Having Kringle in the bed the night before, reminded me of when my children were born.

The difference was that my husband and I did not have evening feedings with Kringle. As I tossed and turned through the night, having Kringle next to me began comfort me.

During the day I was fighting a bad cold but having Kringle with me helped me feel better. When I was going to class, I put her in the passenger seat next to me. However, as I was making sharp turns, I was concerned about her potentially being tossed around in my car, so I sat her in my lap. Unlike my children, I could not get a traffic ticket for a seat belt violation.

As I received strange looks from adults who were perplexed by the sight of me holding Kringle, I became quite protective of her and more firm in my resolve to hold her with pride. I remember one lady that saw me in the parking lot and again in the building. As I walked to class, she stared at me looking so perplexed. I refused to allow her looks to cause me to feel shameful about carrying Kringle. When she perceived my resolve, she looked away and went about her business.

Having Kringle, made me feel happy, warm, and relaxed. As adults, we need to embrace the simple things that bring us joy, including our stuffed animals.
