I really enjoyed the experience of creating the play therapy puppet theater. After finding examples of other play therapy puppet theaters online, I decided to make one that my kids could actually get into. Finding a box large enough was not difficult, and funny enough, the box I did find had other materials in it that could be used to enhance the puppet theater.

It took four cans of spray paint to paint the exterior and interior walls; the flowers were painted with acrylic paint. I wanted to do a play that wasn't too complicated for younger children (like mine) to understand, yet gave a strong message. At first I considered doing "Jack and the Beanstalk," but later opted for "The Little Red Hen."

"The Little Red Hen" is a story in which a the title character seeks help with household duties from her friends, a cat, dog, and duck. To no avail, the hen's friends are unwilling to help her with the work. At the end, the hen bakes a loaf of bread, which is the literal "fruit" of her labor, and suddenly her friends are eager, willing, and available to partake in eating the bread. The hen refuses to let her friends eat the bread, and eats the bread by herself.

There are slight variations to the storyline, but the message is the same. As stated by my 5-year old son, the cat, dog, and duck "didn't get to eat the bread because they didn't do anything." Thus, you can't reasonably expect a reward without putting forth some work first.
