Play Therapy Puppets and Play Therapy Theater: My Experience and Class Assignments

When I was assigned my play therapy puppet theatre I wanted to do something that required little to no money. I also wanted it to be generic so I could use it for any type of play. I started with a diaper box (because I have plenty of those) and decided it wasn't square enough and so I put two boxes together. I found that it wasn't sturdy enough to stand up on its own so I needed to think about it.
I decided if I used leftover trim from where we recently replaced doorways in our house that it would also give my theatre a nice frame. I worked on it a long time trying to figure out the best way to put the trim on so that it would be the support system I needed to keep my theatre standing. Finally I figured out that by putting the trim inside the box it gave it the upport it needed.
I then decided to use left over fabric I had to cover the diaper box and be the curtains on the front. I used hot glitter glue to give it a little sparkle when needed. I used glow in the dark stars to add to the ambiance of the theatre.
I also used a puppet I had previously made to make my creative juices flowing. I decided to write a play about grief because aside from regular school counseling, grief counseling is what I want to do. I wrote the play around the little girl puppet I had, and created a mother and father character speaking about Grandpa. So I knew I needed to create two more puppets and I did so in the fashion that I made the first one.
Puppet theatres are fun for kids. I have known that a long time. It is easy to get kids to create skits for play therapy when they want to and it can be an outlet for them to really talk about things that are on their minds.
