Writing the script for my play therapy class was more fun than I expected. We all have creativity, but this assignment proved this fact to me. I discovered that formal education and social norms force us into a box; we are trained to stay within parameters. This assignment pushed me to the other extreme; complete creative license.
It was liberating to design the play therapy theatre, the puppets, and the script. In writing the script, I started to get excited developing the story. I have NEVER written a script before and started to realize that I enjoyed the experience.
As we often discuss in class, that children love homemade toys, that is was my experience in making the play therapy puppets. I made three different types of puppet and allowed my children to play with them.
Of the 4 puppets, they pictured up the 2 sock puppets. They played with those puppets for hours. I was shocked at how quickly the gravitated to these puppets and played with them because one of them is a teenager.
Being able to see the other students’ work in play therapy was very inspiring. It was helpful to see the broad variety of possibilities. The various ways of presenting ideas we are all familiar with was refreshing. This shows the strength of the use of puppet theatre in working with children.
I will incorporate having children make their own puppets in counseling sessions. I plan on making another puppet theatre and more puppets for my work in private practice and in play therapy.
