Play Therapy / Inner Child Scrapbook Experience

by Play Therapy Student
(Mercer Atlanta)

Working on my inner child scrapbook for play therapy class gave me an excuse to play and decorate and color. It is hard to find time in my schedule to do these things. Usually I am playing with my toddler with whatever “game” he wants to play. This time I got to go on the swings at the playground while my husband watched him play. It was like a little less responsibility for a split second in my life. It was relaxing to see how high I could go and my toddler laughed at me which was joyful for me too.
With many of the pages in the play therapy scrapbook I learned little new information about myself because I am still just a big kid at heart. I haven’t lost my inner child, I have just not given her as much attention as I have gotten older. Every time a new experience is happening though you should see how giddy she can be! I did remember the kind of artwork I liked and the fact that I always wanted a bounce house for my birthday but it was too cold or my parents didn’t have enough money or the biggest reason was because when I was at the age that it would be fun for my friends, I didn’t have any to share it with. My friends were found in sixth grade so we were a little old to play in the bounce house (although I would have). I played in them every field day as a teacher and my students thought it was hilarious that I would go in there and jump like they did.
Something my inner child would while doing this scrapbook for play therapy would be more supplies and fewer interruptions. I really like to draw and create and use pretty things, but that isn’t conducive to having a toddler around. I distracted him with old stickers and a coloring page, but he still wanted to see what mommy was up to! So I know I would have done it differently if I had the time alone and the money to buy the but scrapbooking pages. Still though I liked how it turned out and that is what is important.
