My Self Portrait: A Study in Play Therapy

I did not feel that the play therapy self portrait I created in class accurately depicted me. This is probably because I am not the best drawer and did not like my drawing abilities. I have found that I usually have to use other means to express what I want in an artistic way. So when I created my play therapy self portrait at home, I used different means.
I love to read and am much better at using words to express myself. So, I cut out words from magazines that described me or meant something to me and made a collage for my self portrait. Much like the miniatures in sand tray, I let the words pick me. I really try to let my sub-conscious come through in these activities and I am always amazed at what I see.
I learned that I have a positive view of myself. What is important to me also came through. I was kind of surprised to see how much education meant to me. Maybe it is because school is such a huge part of my life right now.
I love using self portraits as a therapy technique. I believe that it is crucial to the therapeutic relationship for the therapist to know how the client view them self. Creating a self portrait in an artistic way can be cathartic for the client as well as teach them something about themselves. You can also take it a step further and ask the client to create a self portrait of how the world sees them and how they see themselves. I will undoubtedly be using this play therapy technique throughout my career!
