Learn the Doll House Play Therapy Technique / Play Therapy Activity

The Doll House Play Therapy Technique Project was the one project that stirred up quite a few emotions, good emotions and bad emotions. I guess when we were told we had to build a play therapy doll house that represented our childhood home, I didnt worry to much about it. I just figured it would be another fun project that would allow me to use my creative skills.

Thinking back to my childhood brought back good and sad memories. Growing up in a single parent household alowed me to have a great close relationship with my mom and a very distant relationship with my dad. Since I've started this program here at Mercer, I have begun to process and work through a lot of my emotions and feeling towards my dad that I had been holding onto for a long time.

The play therapy doll house was very therapeutic for me. I began my project about three weeks before it was due. I tried really hard to re-create the one bed-room apartment that we lived in, including the sounds of the police cars and the ice-cream trucks. It wasnt much but my mom made it look and feel like a home. There were happy times but there were also sad and challenging times. To re-live those times were very emotional but it felt good to speak and express my feelings out loud.

I will continue to work on building a relationship with my dad. I will continue to journal about my feelings and my progress. I'm happy to say that I do have healthy relationships in my life at the present time. Even though I grew up in apartments all my young life, I'm now a homeowner and it feels good. I try my best to create a loving and warm home for my family.
