Inner Child Play Therapy Class Scrapbook Example

by Play Therapy Student

Putting together the Inner Child Scrapbook for play therapy held a few challenges for me. The scrapbook had two parts, first there was a series of activities to do to engage my inner child. These activities are what gave me substance for the scrapbook. The second part of the assignment was to put together the actual scrapbook.

I remembered something about myself and that was that I do not like doing crafts. I am an artist and I paint and draw, I even went to school for art, however, I do not like doing crafts. I never have. I used to hate art class as a child. I did not get into the arts until I was a teenager. As a teenager I still did not do crafts, my artistic dalliances centered around sketching and drawing.

While creating the scrapbook I had some difficulty. I prefer order and organization, putting the scrapbook together took me way out of my comfort zone. However I did resist the urge to create the scrapbook by computer and turn it into more of a magazine than a scrapbook. I really thought about doing that though.

I did enjoy the activities that went along with making the scrapbook. I liked putting my inner child first and attending to her needs. I had fun going to the toy store. I began to remember all of the toys I always wanted and was pleasantly overwhelmed by the selection in the toy store. I gravitated towards the toys from my youth and had to resist the urge to buy everything. I enjoyed taking my inner child out on a play date and doing things that centered around her. I usually do something nice for myself as often as I can, so these activities fell into line with the plans I was already creating. This assignment had its positives and negatives for me. But I am glad I had the chance to do it and to get further in touch with my inner child, especially in play therapy class.
